Having suffered through 2,000 years of endless war and conflict, the demon king Anos Voldigoad struck a bargain with the human hero Kanon to give his own life to make peace possible. Reborn 2,000 years later, Anos discovers that royal demons now ruthlessly dominate lower class hybrid demons in a culture that prefers Anos's pureblood descendants over the demons that interbred with other species like humans and spirits. Discovering that magic in general has started to weaken and his lineage weaker due to the peace he established, Anos, now a hybrid himself technically, decides to reclaim his previous title. However, he needs to graduate from the Demon King Academy first, where he is a complete misfit.
Light novel edit The series was initially released at the internet as a web novel in April 2017 on the user-created novel publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō by Shu.[3] It was later acquired by ASCII Media Works, who released the first volume as a light novel under their Dengeki Bunko brand in March 2018.[20] As of November 2024, 16 volumes have been published.[21][a] The light novel is published in North America by J-Novel Club.[22] At Anime NYC 2022, J-Novel Club announced that the light novel would also be published in print by Yen Press.[23]. Manga edit A manga version illustrated by Kayaharuka was serialized online through Square Enix's Manga Up! web series from July 2018 to July 2021 and was published in four tankōbon volumes.[3][61] Square Enix released the manga in English.[62] On July 10, 2021, it was announced that the manga series was cancelled because of Kayaharuka's illness as it was already stated they were receiving treatment.[63] It was later stated on July 13 that Kayaharuka passed away on July 6 due to pancreatic cancer.[64]}
