 The Apothecary Diaries is a Japanese light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. Since 2011, it has been serialized online on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. In the following year, it was acquired by Shufunotomo, who initially published the series as a novel with a single volume in 2012 and then as a light novel series in 2014.

Story: Maomao, a pharmacist, is sold into servitude in the Emperor's palace and applies her expertise to solve medical mysteries.

First Season: First aired October 22, 2023, for 24 episodes.

Second Season: First aired October 22, 2024, and was anticipated to be available on Netflix.

Set in a fictional state modeled on Imperial China during the Tang dynasty,[2] and frequently drawing upon knowledge nearer the late Ming dynasty, the series tracks Maomao, a young woman who is an apothecary in a red-light district, kidnapped and sold into the Imperial Palace as an indentured servant. She remains her curious and quirky self and intends to work there until she has served out her two years. When she finds out that the emperor's newborns and concubines are gravely ill, she starts looking into the reason behind it. Employing her knowledge as an apothecary, she is able to crack the mystery of their illness. Despite her intention to keep herself anonymous, her actions do not go unnoticed by Jinshi, a powerful eunuch. She then embarks on mystery solving for the royal court.

The series was initially serialized by Natsu Hyūga [ja] on the user-based web novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2011. The series was later bought by the publisher Shufunotomo and subsequently published under their Ray Books imprint as a single-volume novel on September 26, 2012, illustrated by Megumi Matsuda.[19]
