12-year-old earl Ciel Phantomhive resides in Victorian-era London. He inherited his title and rank after the happenings of his tenth birthday on December 14, 1885, when the Phantomhive manor was besieged by unidentified assailants. Ciel's parents perished along with the family pet, Sebastian, and he is abducted and sold into slavery. He falls into the clutches of a sadistic, demon-worshiping cult and undergoes physical, mental and sexual abuse by his captors. One evening, as part of a ritual to summon a demon, the demon appears but informs Ciel that he came due to Ciel's calling, not the cult members'. Ciel sells his soul to the demon and enters into an agreement to be redeemed; the demon murders all of the cultist members and seals the Faustian contract sign on Ciel's right eye. Part of the agreement is that the demon will devour Ciel's soul as payment for assisting him in his quest; revenge against those who destroyed his family and the House of Phantomhive. Ciel christens the demon Sebastian Michaelis, after his late dog. The pair head back out into society with Ciel assuming his deceased father's role as the Queen's Watchdog: one who is responsible for pursuing cases deemed dangerous to England by Queen Victoria herself. To aid in this endeavor, Sebastian enlists the help of prominent figures like the sniper Mey-Rin, veteran soldier Baldroy and Finnian, a youth with superhuman strength, who come to live at the Phantomhive estate, masquerading as Ciel's servants. As Ciel and Sebastian settle down a number of incidents according to the Queen's command, they turn out to be connected to the "Aurora Society," an underground group conducting experiments on reanimated corpses, headed by a grim reaper with connections to the Phantomhive house by the name of "Undertaker.". Undertaker finally reveals that his actual mission was to revive the body of Ciel's older twin brother and the true Ciel Phantomhive, the original heir of the Phantomhive household. It is also shown that both twins were taken captive and employed in the ritual to call Sebastian, with the initial Ciel being sacrificed during the process and Ciel's younger brother taking his place to avenge their family. The resurrected "Ciel" frames his brother for the atrocities of the Aurora Society and takes over the Phantomhive estate, driving Ciel and his subordinates out. Labeled as fugitives, Ciel, Sebastian and their friends start probing the Aurora Society deeper to establish Ciel's innocence and prevent Undertaker's schemes.
